We began daylily gardening because our grandson, Chris, enjoyed being outside with us doing whatever he could to help. He has always loved gardening and somehow caught the daylily bug at a young age. He helped in planning the layout of the gardens and helped plant the daylilies and care for them for many years. He traveled to many a daylily show and won many awards for the flowers he entered! In 2000, he was the 1st runner up in the Scott's Give Back to Grow Outstanding Young Gardener of the Year for giving many of his daylilies to his school, church, and neighborhood for their beautification projects and for opening his gardens up for our neighbors to tour and enjoy whenever they could. In 2001, he won the Christine Erin Stamile Youth Award and the entire family traveled to see him receive the honor. He has several introductions from the years he was able to spend in the daylily patch and we are still watching some of his seedlings to see if there will be any more coming in the future. These days, Chris is a very busy college student. He is a full time student majoring in Political Science with a minor in Sociology at the University of North Florida and, with a fast track in Public Administration, he hopes to be graduating early (December 2008) and then immediately continue into earning a master's degree. He is also a Senator in student government and very active on campus as well. He works approximately 20 hours per week for Hines, an international real estate development corporation, where he assists the on site Real Estate Agents at a development called Palencia. These days, he is not able to spend time in the garden and is encouraging his Mimi and Poppy to cut back on the number of daylilies in the garden. Mimi has agreed and is currently deciding which of the daylilies, other than her grandson's seedlings, she will keep! Meanwhile, Poppy still sprays for rust and other things every two weeks and is secretly looking forward to the day his wife finally listens to his grandson and they only have one garden to keep up with!
